3 Days in Rome: A Day-by-Day Itinerary

Rome doesn’t need a sales pitch. Two thousand years of history stacked on top of itself, some of the best food on earth, and a city that somehow manages to be chaotic and beautiful in equal measure. Three days gives you the major sights plus time to wander, eat, and sit in a piazza with a glass of wine watching the world go by — which is honestly the best thing to do in Rome.

Best time to go: April–May or September–October. Summer is brutal (35°C+, massive crowds). Winter is mild and uncrowded, but some things close early.

Quick Overview

Day 1: Ancient Rome — Colosseum, Forum & Palatine Hill

Morning — Colosseum & Roman Forum

Book a timed entry ticket online in advance (€18 for Colosseum + Forum + Palatine, or €24 with arena floor access). The 8:30 AM opening slot is the move — the Colosseum is tolerable at 9 AM and miserable by noon.

The Colosseum was completed in 80 AD, took 8 years to build, and held 50,000–80,000 spectators — making it the largest amphitheater ever built. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and draws over 7 million visitors per year. Walk through the arena floor (if your ticket includes it) and imagine the roaring crowd. The hypogeum (underground tunnels where fighters and animals waited) is visible from above. Budget 60–90 minutes.

Exit and walk directly into the Roman Forum — your ticket covers both. This is where Roman public life happened: speeches, trials, commerce, processions. The Arch of Titus, the Temple of Saturn, and the Via Sacra (Sacred Way) are the highlights. Get a map at the entrance or you’ll be staring at unlabeled ruins.

Continue uphill to Palatine Hill — emperors built their palaces here, and the views over the Forum and Circus Maximus are excellent. Budget 2–3 hours total for all three sites.

Where to eat: Walk 10 minutes north to Roscioli on Via dei Giubbonari — a deli/restaurant/bakery that does Roman classics perfectly. The carbonara is textbook. €15–25 for a pasta and a glass of wine.

Afternoon — Piazzas & Gelato

Walk north through the centro storico. Hit these in order (they’re close together):

Where to eat: Giolitti near the Pantheon for gelato — it’s been around since 1900 and the pistachio is excellent. €3–5. Avoid any gelateria where the gelato is piled in bright, fluffy mounds — that’s a sign of artificial ingredients. Real gelato is flat in the tray and the colors are muted.

Evening — Piazza Navona & Campo de’ Fiori

Piazza Navona is the most theatrical square in Rome — three Bernini fountains, Baroque churches, and street performers. Sit at an overpriced cafe for one drink and enjoy the show, then leave for dinner.

Walk to Campo de’ Fiori — the square has a morning market and an evening bar scene. The restaurants around the square itself are tourist traps, but one block in any direction and the quality jumps.

Where to eat: Da Enzo al 29 in Trastevere (15-minute walk across the river) — one of the best trattorias in Rome. Cash only, no reservations, line starts before they open at 7:30 PM. The cacio e pepe and the supplì (fried rice balls) are perfect. €12–18.

Day 2: Vatican City

Morning — Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel

Book online in advance (€17). Go for the 7:30 AM early entry if available (€37, worth every cent) — you’ll have the Sistine Chapel nearly to yourself before the 9 AM rush.

The Vatican Museums house over 70,000 works across 7 kilometers of galleries — one of the largest art collections in the world, attracting roughly 6 million visitors per year. Here’s a focused route: Pinacoteca (Raphael and Caravaggio) → Gallery of Maps (the most photogenic hallway in the world) → Raphael Rooms (School of Athens) → Sistine Chapel. Budget 2.5–3 hours.

In the Sistine Chapel, look up. Take your time. Then look at the wall behind the altar — Michelangelo’s Last Judgment is just as impressive as the ceiling and most people miss it because they’re staring straight up.

There’s a “secret exit” from the Sistine Chapel directly into St. Peter’s Basilica — it’s actually the group tour exit on the right side. Walk through confidently and you’ll skip the massive basilica queue.

Where to eat: Get far from the Vatican before eating — the restaurants within two blocks are some of the worst in Rome. Walk 15 minutes south to Pizzarium (Via della Meloria) — Gabriele Bonci’s pizza al taglio (by the slice). It’s widely considered the best pizza in Rome. Toppings change daily, everything is good. €8–12.

Afternoon — St. Peter’s Basilica & Castel Sant’Angelo

St. Peter’s Basilica is free to enter (dress code: covered shoulders and knees). The scale is almost impossible to process — at 20,139 square meters of interior space, it’s the largest church in the world. The dome, designed by Michelangelo, rises 136.6 meters from floor to cross. Michelangelo’s Pietà, carved when he was just 24 years old, is in the first chapel on the right. Climb the dome (€8 for stairs, €10 for elevator + stairs) — 551 steps total, claustrophobic in places, but the view from the top is the reward.

Walk along the river to Castel Sant’Angelo (€15) — a 2nd-century mausoleum turned papal fortress turned museum. The rooftop terrace has a great view of St. Peter’s dome and the Tiber.

Where to eat: Gelateria del Teatro on Via dei Coronari for gelato made from scratch daily. The ricotta and fig flavor is something special. €3–5.

Evening — Trastevere

Cross the river to Trastevere — cobblestone streets, ivy-covered buildings, and more restaurants per square meter than anywhere else in Rome. The neighborhood is touristy but hasn’t lost its character. Walk through Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere (the basilica is one of the oldest churches in Rome, and the 12th-century mosaics are stunning — free).

Wander the backstreets. The further you get from the main piazza, the more local it feels.

Where to eat: Tonnarello for classic Roman pasta — their cacio e pepe is served in a cheese wheel at the table. Fun and tasty. €10–15. Or Grazia & Graziella on Piazza della Gensola for a slightly more upscale meal with outdoor seating. €20–30.

Pro tip: In Rome, order “un caffè” and you’ll get an espresso. It costs €1–1.50 at the bar (standing) and €3–5 at a table. Drink your morning espresso standing at the bar like a Roman — it’s faster, cheaper, and more authentic.


Day 3: Borghese, Monti & Final Wandering

Morning — Villa Borghese & Galleria Borghese

Galleria Borghese (€15, reservation mandatory — book weeks ahead) is Rome’s best art museum and one of the best in the world. Built in 1613 as a villa for Cardinal Scipione Borghese, it’s small enough to see in 2 hours (your timed entry enforces this — only 360 visitors are admitted per 2-hour slot), and the collection is staggering: Bernini’s Apollo and Daphne, Caravaggio’s David with the Head of Goliath, Canova’s Pauline Bonaparte. The 9 AM slot is ideal.

After, walk through the Villa Borghese gardens — rent a rowboat on the lake (€3 for 20 minutes), find the Pincio Terrace for a view over Piazza del Popolo, and enjoy a park morning.

Where to eat: Caffè Ciampini at the Pincio Terrace — overpriced for Rome (€8 cappuccino) but the terrace view over the city makes it worth one visit.

Afternoon — Monti & Jewish Ghetto

Walk downhill to Monti — Rome’s hippest neighborhood. It’s a grid of narrow streets with vintage shops, wine bars, and aperitivo spots. Via del Boschetto is the main artery. Browse the boutiques, grab a coffee, and enjoy a neighborhood that feels like it belongs to the locals.

Walk south to the Jewish Ghetto — one of Rome’s oldest neighborhoods. The Portico d’Ottavia ruins are atmospheric, and the restaurants here serve Roman-Jewish cuisine that you won’t find anywhere else.

Where to eat: Nonna Betta in the Jewish Ghetto for carciofi alla giudia (Jewish-style fried artichoke — the whole thing, fried until crispy and golden). It’s Rome’s most iconic dish and this is one of the best places to get it. €12–18.

Evening — Aperitivo & Final Dinner

Rome’s aperitivo culture is an institution. Order a Spritz or Negroni (€8–12) and it comes with snacks — sometimes a full buffet. Do this between 6 and 8 PM, then find your last dinner.

Where to eat: Aperitivo at Salotto 42 near the Pantheon — stylish, good drinks, generous snacks. Final dinner at Trattoria Da Teo in Trastevere — book ahead. Seasonal menu, handmade pasta, and one of the most consistent trattorias in the city. €20–35.

Pro tip: Free water fountains (nasoni) are everywhere in Rome — the water comes from ancient aqueducts and is perfectly clean. Bring a reusable bottle and save €3 every time you’d buy a plastic one.
